You said it in your review: these pencils are meant to be used with multiple light layers. I don't have the patience for that and they were scratchy and crumbly. I decided to use them for backgrounds with multiple light layers, more layers for shadows.

If a manufacturer would build a pencil with a prisma thick smooth core and use a thicker wood, said manufacturer would sell billions of pencils and name their price.

Came back to this video. Do you know if this Kalour 520 is the same as the Brutfuner 520? Same exact pencils and colors with different name? Yes, I need all the big sets lol.

As for the markers that dried out- add some glycerin to it, they will work again and will not dry so fast

If you pull the nib of the marker you can refill it with ecoline!

In mid priced pencils for coloring, I do like my Arteza and Castle Arts sets bcs I like their color ranges, and for fun coloring I'm not doing a lot of layering. In the cheaper lines I have found Brutfuner, incuding their Macaron pastel collections, to be quite satisfactory. I dont use a lot of gel pens since they all seem to perform unevenly for me.

I had been considering getting some Tombows before but never did because of the cost. It's great to hear that those Lyras are good. I'll be considering those instead. I'm surprised you don't like the Artezas, I've heard such good things about those. I'd been choosing between those or the Kalour pencils for a budget set. I typically only use artist grade pencils, but I kind of wanted a budget set to carry around with me instead when I want to color while traveling or outside as I tend to lose or drop things. Would you recommend the Kalours instead then? Or is another set better? My favorite pencils are Prismacolor, Polychromos, Lightfast and Holbeins for reference, if that helps anything. I'm in the market for new gels pens so I'll avoid the ones you didn't like as well lol. Also please share what paint pens you use instead of Posca! I usually use them for other things but whenever I do use them for colored pencil pages I always seem to steuggle with them. I used my gold one for accents on a picture I finished and the paint pooled everywhere. It was super annoying. I've used other paint pens before in the past without issue and some of my other Poscas work just fine without issue, nor am I being heavy handed with them, so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I also don't like that the white doesn't cover up the black paper as well as I wish it did.

What I exchanged was 120 Zenacolor set in this strange plastic packaging, which were with 20€ more expensive than cheap coloured pencils from the supermarket and 1€ Store for the quantity, but no better than these. Instead, I bought the Brunftner in the 160 set for 30€ and these are much better, the price-performance ratio is right. The second was a Derwent Artist set with 24 colors, also discounted for 16€, I just wanted a set for sketching with natural tones on the go. I don't know what I was thinking when I ordered these, I bought the wooden box of them years ago for ca 100€ because they have a lot of natural colours. Back then these many cheap sets weren't even available yet, and I mostly only drew with them on Hahnemüle Nostalgia, and they look pretty good on it. I forgot to test these before buying the small set on my sketchbook with different paper, and then I would realize that they only work well with a few papers. I didn't want to buy a new, more expensive sketchbook because I sometimes use coloured pencils to enhance other paintings, and then it would be good if they also worked on other paper. The third set where I asked for my money back was 72 Lightfast, they were too different for me, some were almost as soft as the softer Prismacolor and others were very hard, and therefore they were too different for me. Unfortunately, many of them were not mixed well and could not be applied evenly. They were too expensive for me for the quality delivered

Great video, it will help me think about my purchases in the future and reflect on the things I have purchased. 🙂 For example, I didn't know years ago that things that have been used and worn out a bit, such as coloured pencils, can also be exchanged. I didn't have to keep these. Well, there weren't many coloured pencils that I didn't exchange because of it. It was actually just a Coloursoft 12 set, unfortunately mine was too waxy and was very spotty when applied. Small mountains form and other areas hardly get any colour. I've only ever heard the opposite, that they should be too dry. My Prismacolor are OK but not earth-shattering. I'm not sure whether I would exchange them, many of the pencils are a little harder than others. some of them aren't smooth because the pigments aren't good mixed with the binder. I had the opportunity to buy the 72 Polycolor from Koh-i-Noor for a little less than half of the price of a Prismacolor 132 set. Back then, I was looking for a set with lots and rather unusual colours and there were a few sets with lightfast rating in this price range of them. Approximately the same proportion of the two pencil lines are lightfast. I had ordered a few individual Polycolor from an art shop to test and the 4 were much too dry and strange, like a hybrid of pastel and coloured pencil. The Prismacolor won it. My Prismacolor have hardly broken so far, and at the beginning I had a pencil sharpener from Faber-Castell that had two sizes of graphite and for coloured pencils. It wasn't as pointy as other average sharpeners. But it was just a metal part without a cover or my Kum sharpener, which doesn't make it that pointy either. I now have an adjustable one from T.G.G.A.L or something similar that works best.

Either it’s because Amazon Prime Day is coming up (so prices are inflated) or the word got out that the Lyra dual brush pens are good, and they aren’t much cheaper than Tombows (but still cheaper, and some of the prices are all over the place.) I watched another channel that put about 20 large sets of “cheap” gel pens (under $30) and the winner was Aen Art 160 set on Amazon (currently $23.99)…they did test for bubbles, pens that didn’t work, pens that the ink was all over the place in how much was in the tube, comfort, and smoothness/writeability (and as the person colors, she tested for “smear” with a lot of smearing being good for blending. They paid for all of them, no sponsor/gifted. I’ve heard good (and some bad) things about the Karin paint pens, and a lot of people really like the new Crayola acrylic pens (they come in bullet or brush.) It’s funny that some people will rave about pens, and they become super popular, and you feel like you’re the only person that doesn’t get what’s so good about them…for my regret purchase, of course I bought the entire Mildliner set, cause everyone has them and loves them…and I’m not really a fan (I think I’d probably like the brush pen version and may get some of the colors I like from those.)

Hmm. I like my Arteza's, the 72 set, especially the color range in greens and browns, but I know what you mean about the waxiness. To me, they seem like Prismacolors except a very little bit harder and less breakable. I am slowly finding I like very light, gradual multiple layering best to get the effect I want, so next jump will probably be to oil-prominent pencils anyway.

The swatch books you made are amazing. They should send.something like that with the pencils.

Your WIPs and your completed pictures are beautiful. I had a lot of pencils, wondering will I be able to use them all. Then I thought this is ridiculous, you’ll never use up all these pencils, so I decided to give them to a nursing home and they were very appreciative and I’ve been told they are being put to good use. I did keep some pencils, and you know I had to hold on to my Prisma’s, Black Widow complete set, and other odds and end pencils. And I can say I’m truly content now. So I hope the same outcome for you when you start to declutter. Love your content videos.👍💞🙏🏽😊

I don't understand how people are not able to use POSCA pens. You just have to shake them really well and prime the nib before first use. I have been using them for about 6 years now. Infact I have some from the first set I ever bought and those still work perfectly.

I just scrolled through some old and basic coloring book looking for a page where I can play a bit with my Lyra markers and saw that I have so may WIPs, so I am fully supporting you on this. 👍🏻

Kori, it IS ok to have WIPs, and all of them have so many potential 😊. Yes, my summary after my “I am moving” sale, the ones that were not included were my Prismas and Inktense 🎉

I'm in Belgium so I hardly know any of these brands. However, I also have regrets. I had this set with white markers that just didn't work. I love to sketch with white gelli pens when on holiday, so now I was on holiday with useless markers

I love the blue with the butterflies the most and I love it just the way it is!!! But all of them are so pretty! I need to destash pencils too. I must have a dozen WIPs running around here. lol

Love all your pages and embracing WIPs. I’m starting to feel like you do about just sticking to my favorite pencils, which is polys. I keep getting drawn in to the latest, shiny new budget pencil, but the differences between all the budget pencils are not very big to me. I keep saying I’ll use them up on Amazon paper and not replace them.

Instead of Tombows/Lyras, try the Amazon Basics version. They even come with a stand for all of them. If you plan on getting rid of the Arteza colored pencils, I'd be happy to purchase them, I've been trying to find them for a while and I want to try them out! I actually love my chameleon colored pencils and I'm sad they're so unpopular/discontinued, I don't use them often so they don't run out too fast.

I think if you really want the Kalour, the 300 is a good enough amount. Like, 520 colored pencils? That's WAY TOO MANY. Edit: You said these exact words in the video. 😅

Prismacolor! Supposedly the best, I will never buy Prismacolor pencils! I have bought them and had people gift them to me, and by the time they go through shipping and arrive here in Juneau Alaska, no matter how they are packaged, every single pencil, the cores are shattered all the way through. So once you have to sharpen them for the first time, you might as well throw them away because the cores will break and fall out the moment you try to sharpen them! Guaranteed every single pencil evety size and style, color, type, if its Prismacolor, iit wont survive the trip to Alaska! So not worth the hundreds of dollars they cost to buy and ship up here....
